Henry Elias Fries was a member of the Davidson College class of 1878. While a student, he was a member of the Philanthropic Society and was a co-founder of Societas Fratrum. He served in the North Carolina General Assembly in 1887 and as mayor of Salem for three terms. He was a member of the Davidson College Board of Trustees from 1886 to 1891 and helped organize the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts.
